The graduate certificate in Hispanic Studies gives students an advanced knowledge of literary, cultural and intellectual movements of the Spanish-speaking world and of the key scholarly debates that animate their study. In addition, students develop competence in academic writing and speaking in the certificate language.

Graduate Certificate

The graduate certificate in Hispanic Studies gives students an advanced knowledge of literary, cultural and intellectual movements of the Spanish-speaking world and of the key scholarly debates that animate their study. In addition, students develop competence in academic writing and speaking in the certificate language.

Program Requirements

  • Three seminars in the certificate program
    • At least two of these must be at the 2000 level, and one of the papers must be written in the certificate language. 
  • A substantial piece of writing in the certificate area, produced outside the structure of courses. 
    • This might be a dissertation chapter, a paper presented at a national of international conference, or a scholarly article
  • A presentation at a certificate colloquium, which will be held according to need, annually or bi-annually
    • The candidate should give a short presentation of their work with material in the certificate language, explaining its relevance for their course study.

Application Requirements

  • A minimum of intermediate proficiency in the certificate language
  • A 250-450 word statement of purpose
  • A plan for completion of the requirements
  • Approval from the DGS or chair of the home department
  • AB.A. or M.A. transcript
  • The applicant's CV
