The Hispanic Studies DUG hopes to bring concentrators in closer contact with our faculty and graduate students, with each other, and with a broad range of activities and disciplines related to Hispanic Studies both inside and outside of Brown.

  • Timothy Lake

    Timothy Lake

    Timmy Lake (he/him) is a senior from Fair Haven, NJ, double concentrating in Hispanic Studies and Science, Technology, and Society. On campus, Timmy is a Student Coordinator and Tour Guide for the Office of Admissions, as well as an Academic Coach for the Office of Athletics. He works with the Brown Elementary Afterschool Mentoring Program to provide after school care to Spanish-speaking students in the Providence Public School District. As an active member of the Hispanic Studies department, he volunteered at the Festival de Literatura Iberoamericana en Providence (FLIP) in April 2024. He is excited to engage more with the Hispanic Studies department this year.

  • Karina Ortiz

    Karina Ortiz is a senior from Chicago, IL, and also calls Aguascalientes, Mexico, home. She is double concentrating in Hispanic Studies and Health and Human Biology. On campus, Karina is passionate about bridging communication barriers for Spanish-speaking patients through her role as a qualified medical interpreter. Outside of campus, Karina has volunteered at free clinics in both Chicago and Providence, gaining hands-on experience in patient care. After graduation, she plans to pursue a degree in the healthcare field, with aspirations to work in hospice services.

    Lila Rizvi

    Lila Rizvi (she/her) is a junior and a native Rhode Islander. She is double concentrating in Health and Human Biology and Hispanic Studies. She plans to study abroad in Santiago, Chile in spring 2025 and is excited to explore the city, neighboring countries, and hopefully a bit of Patagonia. She is committed to growing her knowledge and connecting with the Hispanic community to help bridge gaps within the U.S. healthcare system. Additionally, she loves experiencing the rich culture, amazing music, and delicious cuisines of the Spanish-speaking world. Outside of classes, Lila is an EMT with Brown EMS and works in a lab researching spinal tumors. She enjoys spending her free time taking pictures, eating ice cream, playing tennis, and going on walks around College Hill.
